Saudi Arabia has inaugurated the largest salmon production facility in the Middle East, marking a significant step in the country’s drive to develop its aquaculture industry.

The Excellence Center for Salmon Production, officially opened by Hail governor Prince Abdulaziz bin Saad bin Abdulaziz on Saturday, is equipped with advanced marine technology and is positioned to reduce reliance on salmon imports.

The 10,000-square-meter facility integrates recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and aquaponics units, which combine fish farming with vegetable production. It is the result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture and King Abdulaziz University, with a focus on innovation and sustainability.

Saudi Arabia currently imports significant quantities of salmon each year, and the new facility is expected to help bridge this gap by scaling up local production. While specific production targets have not been disclosed, the Excellence Center is seen as a key contributor to the country’s food security strategy.

Prince Abdulaziz described the project as a “cornerstone” of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on imports. Officials emphasized the facility’s potential to serve as a regional model for sustainable aquaculture, creating jobs and fostering innovation in the process.
