Man killed while boarding wellboat

Tragic accident in Sortland, Northern Norway.

Last night, at 03:47am, police received a report that a man had fallen into the sea at the quay in Sortland, Northern Norway. The accident happened when the man was boarding a boat. People who were nearby immediately started to help get the man out of the sea and first aid was applied.

But the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported this in a press release, reproduced by a number of media outlets, on Friday morning.

Authorities did not want to disclose which boat or company is involved, but SalmonBusiness knows that it is about the wellboat “Robas”, owned by the shipping company Rostein.

Rostein also confirmed that the accident occurred in their company.

“There has been a tragic incident in connection with boarding one of our vessels. Police are investigating the matter and we have no way to comment further,” Rostein’s deputy chief executive Glen Bradley told SalmonBusiness.

The deceased is in his 50s and lived in Møre og Romsdal, Western Norway. His next of kin have been notified.

“Robas” is still in port in Sortland.

The remaining crew is now being looked after by the municipality’s crisis team, the police added in the press release.
