Leroy Processing Spain: “We expect sushi as a category to develop further”

48 per-cent growth of Japanese salmon snack over three years.

Last week, it was reported that sushi consumption had been boosted across homes in Spain.

The numbers were collated by the trade group the Spanish Association of Prepared Dishes Manufacturers (Asefapre).

In 2020, 2,715 tonnes of prepared sushi were consumed in Spanish homes, representing a growth of 48 per-cent over three years.

Overall, the volume of salmon consumed by Spanish households in 2020 reached approximately 61,000 tonnes, according to Statista, an increase on 2019’s 53,000 tonnes.

A spokesman for Leroy subsidiary Leroy Processing Spain, which supplies sushi to the retail giant Mercadona, told SalmonBusiness that the increase is “related to investing in quality together with dedicated partners”.

“We expect sushi as a category to develop further in a broader direction around Asian food,” he added.

Leroy Processing Spain has processing sites in Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona. It opened a new EUR 17 million seafood centre (finished in May) in Madrid, next to Mercamadrid, one of the biggest fish markets in the world. The site offers products like ready-meals, sushi, fillets, frozen and fresh-packed products to the Iberian markets.

SalmonBusiness reported on Thursday that Mowi was confident that the gradual Western European opening of HORECA would have a positive influence on seafood/salmon sales to retail.

Leroy Processing Spain shared the optimism. “Yes, we expect an increase in demand related to the opening of catering and that home consumption will be stronger in the future than pre-coronavirus,” he said.
