Nordic Aquafarms executives recently lead a tour of the property where they plan to build their second USA land-based salmon farm. The Samoa Peninsula project in Humboldt County, is expected to produce 27,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon.
Nordic Aquafarms also runds Fredrikstad Seafoods, which is currently producing around 20 tonnes per week at a site in Fredrikstad, Norway.
The 766,530 square feet site is planned on being built on the corroding remains of the Evergreen Pulp mill.
According to documents filed to the Humboldt County Planning Department, at full production it is currently estimated that there will be 40 outgoing product delivery trucks per week.
With 30 per-cent going to the Seattle area, 30 per-cent going to the Los Angeles area, and 40 per-cent going to the San Francisco Bay Area. Though the final distribution strategy for the facility is still in development.
Executives told Lost Coast Outpost that Nordic plans to spend an estimated USD 100 million on clean-up, remediation, demolition and various site improvements.
Much of the site contains hazardous materials such as lead and asbestos.
Nordic Aquafarms’ is also planning on building a USD 500 million land-based fish farm in Belfast, Maine. When completed, it will produce 33,000 tonnes at the site.
