Bernadette Jordan had faced heavy criticism over her handling of the fishery disputes between commercial and indigenous fisherman as well the as decision to close down a number of commercial salmon fisheries in British Columbia.

Canadian Fisheries and Oceans Minister Bernadette Jordan lost her seat in the federal election on Monday. Jordan has faced heavy criticism over her handling of the fishery disputes between commercial and indigenous fisherman.

Her failure to find a resolution between the two parties is thought to have been a major factor in her defeat. “We have thousands of fishermen that work in this riding — it’s our No. 1 industry — and they were very upset with the way the Liberal government treated them over the last couple of years,” victorious conservative candidate, Rick Perkins, told Global News.

Earlier this year, Jordan had been responsible for closing down nearly 60 per cent of British Columbia’s commercial salmon fisheries, the economic and cultural foundation for many coastal communities.

Opponents on social media were quick to crow about the minister’s downfall.

Jordan was first elected as a member of Parliament in 2015 and had served as a minister in Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s government since 2019.
