Singapore RAS has announced plans to produce 1,000 metric tons of salmon by 2025, with the vision of potentially expanding further to 3,000 metric tons to meet the city-state’s 30/30 food sufficiency target.
In a press release published on Monday, Singapore RAS announced that it has entered into an agreement with OFS Norge (OFS) and Onshore Technologies (ONTECT) for a Basic Design Study of its recirculating aquaculture system planned in Singapore.
The deal will also provide the opportunity for strategic and financial co-operation on the project as well as local aquaculture capacity building based on ONTEC’s Academy in Måløy.
“Singapore RAS aims to establish itself as a leading-edge onshore sustainable producer of Atlantic Salmon in Singapore, right next to the dinner table in the largest per capita salmon market in South East Asia,” Singapore RAS CEO Esben Johnsen said.
“Singapore RAS is very pleased to announce our partnership with OFS/ONTEC leveraging OFS/ONTEC’s decades of technology development, with amongst the lowest per unit energy requirement in the industry and a strong focus on local skills and capacity building,” Johnsen added.
The Singaporean company hopes the deal will allow it to boost its production to 1,000 tonnes of salmon by 2025, eventually growing to 3,000 metric tonnes, demonstrating the company’s biological and commercial success. Currently, Singapore imports around 90 percent of the food its citizens consume, sparking the desire to become more self-sufficient.
Singapore is working towards a 30 by 30 strategy to ramp up its agri-food industry’s capability and capacity to produce 30% of its nutritional needs locally and sustainably by 2030. Alongside the city-state’s Green Plan 2030, it hopes to ensure it’ll build a more resilient food future that is less reliant on imports or disrupted by supply issues.
