Chile harvested 182,000 tons of farmed Atlantic salmon in the first quarter of 2022, which is 12.7 percent less than the volume harvested in the same period last year, according to the latest data from the country’s Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Atlantic salmon was harvested mainly in the Aysén and Los Lagos regions, with 81.4 thousand tons and 63.5 thousand tons, respectively.
Atlantic salmon represents roughly 45 percent of Chile’s salmonid aquaculture, while Pacific salmon (Coho) accounts for 12.5 percent and Rainbow trout, 6.2 percent.
Data show production of Coho (50,100 tons) and Rainbow trout (24,000 tons) increased during the period by 6.2 percent and 30.9 percent, respectively, compared to Q1 2021.
Roughly 109 million eggs were available to the industry in Q1 2022, which is 17.5 percent lower than in Q1 2021.
The proportion of egg production by species was 83.4 percent Atlantic salmon, 10.4 percent, Pacific salmon and 6.1 percent rainbow trout.
The sector did not import any eggs in Q1 2022, whereas in Q1 2021, it imported 21,000 Atlantic salmon eggs from Iceland.
