Chile’s top court has rejected AquaChile’s appeal for the reconsideration of its penalty for failing to report salmon mortalities within the deadline.
The fish mortalities occurred between December 31, 2019 and March 11, 2020 at the company’s farm in the Aysén region.
In its appeal, the salmon producer pointed out that the courts determined that it did not cause any environmental damage.
But the Supreme Court upheld the penalty of 150 UTM (monthly tax units) for the violation.
Chile’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) has sought for a much greater sanction against Aquachile, but the Supreme Court rejected the demands.
The fine of 150 UTM is only 95 percent of the fine that Sernapesca asked for. It also asked for the suspension of Aquachile’s operations for two production cycles, but the court rejected that, as well.
