Ongoing expansion work will see Icelandic salmon farmer Arctic Fish triple smolt capacity at its RAS facility in Nordurbotn while also working to finalize the process for an additional license to farm one more fjord to bring them to a total of five.
The company, which is licensed to farm in the Westfjords of Iceland, plans to sell around 10,600 tons of salmon per year.
It sold 4,221 tons of product in Q1 2022, according to the latest figures available, after a mortality incident that cost the company around 1.9 billion ISK ($13.4 million). The company attributed it to compromised fish health.
The reinforcement of the smolt facility will result to “strong and healthy smolt, reduce biological risk, increase production efficiency and enable organic growth,” the company said on Friday on LinkedIn.
The additional license, once granted, will bring the total MAB to 31,900 tonnes in the coming years, it said on its website.
Arctic Fish is majority owned by Norway Royal Salmon. In June, icelandic company Síldarvinnslan bought 34.2 percent of the collective shares of the other shareholders.
There are currently around six companies with salmon farming operators in Iceland, where Arctic Fish is among the leading ones, according to Reuters.
