The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that St James Smokehouse in Miami, Florida, is recalling 93 cases of its own brand Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon 4oz Packages.

The company is taking the step over fears the cases could have been contaminated with Listeria after routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture detected the bacteria.

Listeria can cause fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In the most severe form, listeria can result in a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. For very young, elderly or immune-compromised people, it can lead to death. Around 260 of the 1,600 Americans infected by listeria each year die from the bacteria.

The recalled cases were sold and distributed by the smokehouse from February and June 2022 in stores across Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Washington State, Virginia and Wisconsin.

As of the recall announcement on Friday 2nd September, no illness were reported. The FDA is aiding the voluntary recall.
