The number of salmon killed by an algal bloom outbreak in Chile has now reached an estimated 1,500 metric tons, according to Chile’s Fisheries and Aquaculture agency, Sernapesca.
Sernapesca reports that 100% of the salmon mortality from the Reloncaví Estuary has now been removed.
A single site accounted for 60% of the recorded mortality (890 tons), according to the Chilean authorities.
A decrease in the concentration levels of the microalgae Thalassiosira pseudonana has been recorded in the area.
Last week, Chilean salmon farmers Trusal and Caleta Bay were named as the operators of two production sites involved in the mass mortality in the Reloncavi Estuary in Los Lagos.
