Land-based salmon producer Gigante Salmon has announced a significant advancement in their Rødøy facility’s construction with the first production unit now filled with seawater for testing.
This milestone, announced on Monday, marks the start of functional testing for the production equipment, with the company aiming to introduce smolt following the successful completion of the test phase.
Gigante Salmon CEO Helge E. W. Albertsen was upbeat following the announcement.
“Initial test run is positive,” he said. “Everything is working as planned and we have not encountered any unforeseen challenges.”
The land-based salmon farming operation is set to launch production in unit no.3, with the two additional units slated for completion in 2024 and the entire plant expected to be fully operational in the second half of the same year.
Earlier this year, the company admitted the project was going to cost around £15 million more than originally planned, thanks to increased energy and construction costs.
