Fillet share of Norwegian salmon exports increased from 25% last year to 30% this year when converted into round weight.
Norway exported 82,662 tons of salmon worth NOK 10.1 billion ($959.5 million) in May, marking an 8% increase in value, equivalent to NOK 724 million ($68.8 million), compared to the same month last year. This also represents a 2% growth in volume.
The largest markets for Norwegian salmon in May were Poland, Denmark, and Spain. The price of fresh salmon fillets reached a record high of NOK 164 per kg ($15.58), surpassing the previous record of NOK 159 per kg ($15.11/€14.54) set in April 2023.
“May was the first month in 2024 to see growth in salmon volumes. At the same time, fillet exports continue to increase compared with last year. This applies to both volume and value,” said Seafood Analyst Paul T. Aandahl of the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Fresh fillet volumes grew by 35% to 13,223 tons, and frozen fillet volumes rose by 21% to 5,836 tons. The export value of fresh salmon fillets increased by 40% to NOK 2.2 billion ($209 million), while frozen fillet exports grew by 13% to just over NOK 900 million ($85.5 million).
