On Thursday, September 19, Benchmark Genetics Salten received confirmation from the Norwegian Veterinary Institute that organ samples from a single broodfish tested positive for infectious salmon anemia (ISA).
The virus levels detected were low, and no clinical signs of disease have been observed in the affected tank or elsewhere at the facility.
The tank, which houses 628 broodfish, is an isolated epidemiological unit with a separate water system and dedicated equipment. The fish in the affected tank have been quarantined, and the broodstock will be culled as a precaution. Eggs from the positive broodfish have also been destroyed.
Benchmark Genetics has implemented a biosafety screening routine since January 2023, including testing all eggs for ISA before delivery. The company is working with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) to manage the situation and minimize risk.
Benchmark stated that they employ a strict screening regime for broodstock and dead fish, allowing for early detection of isolated incidents. The company added that all incubated eggs have tested negative for ISA and does not expect this incident to affect its ability to fulfill customer orders.
