Manitoba backs $107 million development of Canada’s largest Arctic char facility

Scheduled to open in 2026, the facility will produce 5,000 metric tonnes of Arctic char annually, increasing the global supply by 50%.

The Manitoba government has announced its support for the development of a CAD 145 million (US$107 million) Arctic char aquaculture and fish processing facility in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood, approximately 30 kilometers north of Winnipeg.

The project, led by Sapphire Springs., is expected to create over 100 full-time jobs and position Manitoba as a leader in Arctic char production.

Economic Development Minister Jamie Moses and Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn highlighted the economic impact of the project, which is anticipated to generate an additional 120 indirect jobs. The government is providing a repayable loan of up to CAS 10.75 million to Sapphire Springs. to support the initiative.

“We’re taking action to bring more good jobs to Manitoba and grow our economy,” said Moses. “We are proud that this world leading facility will expand economic opportunities for Manitoba and create new jobs in the RM of Rockwood, all while producing high-quality sustainable food.”

Sapphire Springs CEO Ken Blair emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and its role in meeting the growing demand for healthy protein.
