New conditions for dispensation of automatic lice counters in Norway

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) has introduced new conditions for salmon farmers seeking dispensation to use automatic lice counters. According to a statement on their website, equipment suppliers must now agree to participate in government-initiated research projects as part of the dispensation process.

Starting in January 2025, this requirement will apply to all applications for automatic lice counters. The authority aims to use the data collected to improve the accuracy of lice counts in pens and enhance fish welfare by reducing the need for manual handling.

Mattilsynet believes automatic lice counting can offer a more accurate picture of lice levels, help farmers anticipate increasing lice pressure, and improve fish welfare. Two ongoing research projects, led by the Institute of Marine Research and SINTEF, are studying the use of automatic lice counters. However, the authority notes that few technology suppliers have opted to participate in these projects.
