What happens when a bluefin tuna gets into a salmon farm?

It was an ordinary morning for the crew at Sulefisk as they prepared to start feeding, until something decidedly extraordinary appeared in one of their salmon pens. A bluefin tuna was spotted swimming around, seemingly confused about how it ended up there.

The culprit? A hole discovered at a depth of 22 meters in the pen’s net. As soon as the tuna made its appearance, the team quickly alerted the Fiskeridirektoratet and divers were called in to investigate the breach. Thankfully, there are no signs of any salmon escapees—just one very lost tuna.

But there’s a hitch: Mother Nature. With strong winds and high waves thrashing the site, it’s all hands off deck for now, according to the company’s Facebook page. For safety reasons, the team can’t begin the repair work or attempt to catch the rogue tuna until the weather calms down.

300kg of angry bluefin caught in your pen? The Norwegian government has produced a handy guide on what to do next…

“We’ve got all the equipment ready and are just waiting for a break in the weather,” says the crew. In the meantime, they’ve filmed the tuna circling inside the pen, along with footage of the hole sitting quietly at 22 meters deep.

Stay tuned for more updates, and hopefully a happy ending for our wayward tuna!
