The University of Stirling has named Laila Al Farsi as the first recipient of the Nikos Steiropoulos Aquaculture Bursary, a prestigious award funded by MSD Animal Health UK.
The bursary, established in memory of the late Nikos Steiropoulos, supports students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable aquaculture, aquatic pathobiology, or aquatic veterinary studies at the university’s Institute of Aquaculture. Steiropoulos, an alumnus of the University of Stirling, enjoyed a distinguished 20-year career in aquaculture, focusing on fish health and welfare.
Miss Al Farsi, who discovered aquaculture by chance when selecting a scholarship option in Oman, has since developed a strong passion for the sector. After completing an undergraduate degree in aquaculture and working with the Nutritional Analytical Service at the university, she pursued a master’s degree with encouragement from her supervisor.
“This bursary has eased a significant financial burden and given me the confidence and peace of mind to fully focus on my studies and personal growth,” said Miss Al Farsi.
Vicki Farr, Technical and Marketing Lead for MSD Animal Health UK, highlighted Steiropoulos’s contribution to the aquaculture industry: “Nikos was an invaluable member of the sector with a clear passion for fish health and welfare. We’re proud to support the next generation of aquaculture professionals in his honour.”
The Nikos Steiropoulos Aquaculture Bursary will fund one student annually over the next five years, reflecting MSD Animal Health UK’s ongoing commitment to advancing the aquaculture industry.
