UK Seafood Federation launched to represent industry interests.

The UK seafood processing and trading sector has united under a new banner with the launch of the UK Seafood Federation (UKSF). The federation merges the Seafood Industry Alliance (SIA), Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance (SGHA), and Provision Trade Federation’s seafood division, creating a singular voice for the industry.

Simon Smith, Vice-Chair of Sofina Foods (Europe) and former chair of SGHA, will chair the new organisation. The management team includes Simon Dwyer as CEO, alongside Andrew Kuyk, Mike Short, and SGHA veterans Professor Val Braybrooks, Julie Waites, and Joanne Woodhouse. UKSF will also join the European Fish Processors Association, AIPCE, extending its influence across the continent.

With an annual contribution of over £8 billion in sales to UK retail and food service, the sector plays a vital role in the economy. The UKSF’s mission is to position seafood as a cornerstone of a healthier national diet and sustainable future. Its strategy will address key challenges, including workforce skills, ethical standards, sustainability, trade facilitation, and industry reputation.

“This marks a milestone for the UK’s seafood processing and trading businesses,” said Simon Smith. “UKSF brings together a fully committed board and a proven delivery team to tackle industry priorities and champion our sector’s growth.”

The launch has received broad support from key industry figures. Mike Sheldon, Chairperson of the Seafish Industry Authority, welcomed the initiative, noting its alignment with Seafish’s corporate goals. Jimmy Buchan, CEO of the Scottish Seafood Association, also praised UKSF, citing a strong history of collaboration with SGHA and its partners.

Andrew Wallace, Fish and Fisheries Director at the Fishmongers’ Company, highlighted SGHA’s achievements in skills development and stakeholder engagement, expressing optimism about UKSF’s potential to build on this foundation.
