Smögenlax secures permit for 6,000-tonne salmon farm.
Swedish land-based salmon startup Smögenlax Aquaculture AB has received environmental approval for its planned 6,000-tonne-per-year land-based Atlantic salmon farm in Smögen/Kungshamn, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for construction to proceed.
The approval, granted after a lengthy review process, allows Smögenlax to advance with the development of what it describes as Sweden’s first large-scale domestically produced salmon operation.
“This was the last remaining obstacle, and we can now move forward with construction,” said Joel Oresten, Chairman of Smögenlax. The company aims to become the first producer to supply sustainable, Swedish-farmed salmon, targeting the domestic market.
Aiming for Market Impact
Sweden consumes approximately 50,000 tonnes of salmon per year, with imports meeting nearly all of the demand. Smögenlax’s planned 6,000-tonne production will be positioned as a significant step towards domestic supply, with the company citing potential food security benefits.
“Our contribution will be substantial in terms of local production, not least from a preparedness perspective,” Oresten added.
Circular Economy Integration
The facility will be built in Kungshamn’s circular economy industrial park, where Smögenlax will operate alongside Renahav Sverige AB and other sustainability-focused enterprises. The integration is expected to reduce environmental impact by minimising waste, recycling resources, and repurposing industrial byproducts.
The company plans to utilise carbon-neutral energy, generated from local food industry waste, to power operations. Proximity to processing and packaging facilities within the Renahav circular park will further reduce transport emissions, supporting Smögenlax’s claim that its products will be among the most sustainable on the market.
Smögenlax stated that it has secured full financing, with 100% Swedish ownership backing the project.
With environmental approval now in place, construction will proceed, and Smögenlax intends to position itself as a leading supplier of sustainably farmed salmon for the Swedish market.
