Strong start for global fishmeal and fish oil production in 2025.

Global fishmeal production increased by approximately 75% in January 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to market intelligence reports. The surge was primarily driven by a 300% rise in Peruvian output, with Chile, the USA, Spain, and several African countries also reporting higher production levels year-on-year.

Fish oil production followed a similar trend, rising 71% in January 2025, again largely due to Peru. Other regions also reported increased output, with the exception of Northern Europe.

These figures are based on data from IFFO members in key producing nations, including Chile, Denmark, Norway, Peru, and the USA, which together account for 40% of global fishmeal production and 50% of fish oil output.

In contrast, China’s aquafeed production declined by 3.5% in 2024, with domestic sales dropping by approximately 10%, according to the China Feed Industry Association (CFIA).

The decline was attributed to unfavorable weather, weak farm-gate prices, and cost-cutting measures by farmers. Pig feed production, another major consumer of fishmeal, also fell by 3.9% due to reduced pork supply.

Until the next fishing season begins in September 2025, China is expected to rely on frozen fish and imports, including sardines, for its fishmeal and fish oil production.
