The salmon price is holding itself up around the five-euro mark
“It looks like there’s a little unsold fish, 6-pluss in Oslo, that’s holding down all sizes. It’s weighing down 3 to 6 kilo,” the buyer at a smoker told SalmonBusiness. “We see, too, that a little more fish is coming through to the cutting board next week, if the weather doesn’t hit again.”
“So, we see a little downtick. I see a good two kroner down on the main sizes 3 to 6 kg. We’ve bought at that level. It’s still high prices based on supply and demand. I would have thought prices would be lower now,” he added.
More wanted
Industry sources SalmonBusiness spoke to on Friday refer to the following spot prices for salmon to be delivered next week:
2 to 3 kg, EUR 4.5 to 4.7
3 to 4 kg, EUR 5.2 to 5.5
4 to 5 kg, EUR 5.4 to 5.6
5 to 6 kg, EUR 5.5 to 5.7
6-plus kg, EUR 5.6 to 6.1
“It’s a little early. Fish farmers are optimists. They want more. I think you have to higher up to 6-plus (kg) to get the volume,” a trader commented.
Logistics
“Those prices there make sense,” commented a salmon farmer’s head of sales.
“I put some onto planes. There have been some logistical challenges lately (like strong winds), but it’s gone okay here in the south. We trailer a lot out to Oslo for fly-out fish. That’s the most secure.
Several sources point to falling currencies as a negative. As we write, Norwegian kroner trade against the key currency, the euro, at 9.57, a marked drop from year-end.
“The currency here is falling. That alone is a krone or two from last Friday. We haven’t set a firm price, yet. The price is on the way down. It’s been under pressure all week,” an exporter said.
