Leroy Seafood Group’s Dutch processor business, Rodé Vis, has opened its fifth and largest location at Leroy Seafood Center in Urk.

Plant commissioning is underway ahead of start-up next week, SalmonBusiness has learned. The fully automated new processor plant is said to be compliant with “current and expected” regulations in food safety.

The new Center will function as a deep-frozen storage and logistics hub for all Leroy Seafood locations in Europe. It’ll also serve as a logistics hub for Rodé Vis’s other Dutch production sites. “The Seafood Center will be the Leroy Seafood axis in Europe,” company sales director, Elias Bosma, was quoted as saying about the new “fish capital of Europe”, as he called in when construction first started last year.

Last year, Rodé Vis starte building its new headquarters at Urk, part of a 17,000-square-meter parcel of land purchased for an 11,000 sq. m facility, much of it aimed at smoking salmon.

The company hopes its focus on automation will help it compete against increasingly competitive but more labour-intensive processors in Eastern Europe.
