In March last year, the Dutch firm Albatros Technology applied for nine Norwegian development licenses for its “AquaBarge” concept. Just before Christmas, the company confirmed that Sauda, Western Norway, was the only alternative for the location of the project.
The project, a sea-based barge designed to farm salmon in a closed containment system, is based on RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) technology. The barge would have the following dimensions; length 195 metres, width 55 metres and depth 22 metres.
Planned production is 10,000 tonnes per year.
The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has confirmed it has rejected the application on the grounds that the concept does not meet the requirement of “significant innovation”. The directorate also pointed out that both RAS and barge technology are already established in the aquaculture industry.
