Marine Harvest Canada has reported the escape of a single Atlantic salmon to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).
A single Atlantic salmon escaped while fish were being loaded onto a transport vessel during an approved fish transfer from Marine Harvest’s Port Elizabeth facility according to a press release on its official site.
This incident occurred on Friday May 11th, and was reported to DFO immediately. Marine Harvest said that it had conducted an investigation into the incident and has determined that proper fish transfer procedures were not followed. Further measures are being put in place to prevent a re-occurrence.
This is the first salmon escape from a Marine Harvest Canada operation since March 2017, where two fish escaped.
