Site planned in Saudi Arabia’s Neom – described as one of the “world’s ambitious building projects”.
Bloomberg reported on Mowi’s and Saudi Arabia’s ambitious synergetic actions on salmon. One one side, the world’s largest salmon farmer aimed to introduce more fish to the lucrative Middle Eastern market. On the other side, the Saudi appetite is growing – with an aim to almost double per capita fish consumption.
The publication reported that UAE sales more than doubled in the first four months compared with the same period of 2018, to 2.1 million pounds ($2.7 million), U.K. customs figures show.
Mowi said that is currently going through the paperwork with the Saudi government to become an approved supplier.
Though the Kingdom is also keeping an eye on land-based tech.
Fish Farm, headquartered in Dubai, UAE, has set up an inland farming facility in Jebel Ali, and are now successfully selling two tonnes of salmon a week, after it achieved the extraordinary with
the UAE’s first ever salmon harvest in April.
In the Bloomberg article, it was mentioned that a Saudi investor has been awarded a license to develop a farm in the kingdom. But also that construction is expected to start next year north of the coastal city of Jeddah. Furthermore, another potential salmon farm is being considered for Neom, the Saudi crown prince’s futuristic city on the Red Sea, he said.
Images of Neom looks straight out of a science fiction film. The new USD500 billion megacity will be funded by the government- will be more than twice the size of neighbouring Qatar, and will be run by AI robots with very latest cutting edge tech in everything and beyond. Work on the first phase of the megacity project, called NEOM Bay, is set to begin within weeks.
In April, Edmund Broad, Fish Farm’s business development manager told GulfNews that the Kingdom had expressed interest in the RAS fish farming technology for Neom.
