Construction is continuing on the world’s longest ocean farm which is set to accommodate two million salmon.
The 385-metre-long construct is named after Jostein Albert Refsnes, the former chairman of Nordlaks, and is being built in China. Meanwhile, the project itself is called Havfarmen, the Ocean Farm in Norwegian.
In a post on Facebook, the company wrote: “Jostein Albert is starting to take shape! Here are two pictures from the construction of the bow section to the first Ocean Farm. The first 1/3 of Ocean Farm is being built at the CIMC Raffles yard in Haiyang, and the other two parts are being built at the Yantai yard.
“During the winter, all three parts will be moved to the Yantai dry dock and assembled there. It’s quite amazing to see that this project is really starting to take shape.”
The project will see fish swimming in it as early as next year. However, there have been some alterations as it was due to weigh 22,000 tonnes, but it will now weigh 33,000 tonnes.
Lars Fredrik Martinussen, head of communications at Nordlaks, told SalmonBusiness: “The Ocean farm is a complicated structure, and it was known early on that verification of design and dimensions could lead to changes.”
“I do not know what is common when building ocean farms or larger ships or oil installations, but there is no drama in this. The Ocean Farm has become stronger and more solid.”
