Over the past month, salmon prices have remained stable at record highs. It continues next week.
“The sale has gone pretty good this week. It’s not too much fish around,” says a trader to SalmonBusiness.
“The fall is coming, but who knows when?” he asks rhetorically. “The feeding activity is good. And when the fish grows well, one may not want to harvest,” he adds. [factbox]
Several of the market participants characterize the market as awaiting and impetuous. But prices seem to stay high.
“I have the impression that the smaller farmers have a little less volume, but then the big ones come with a little extra,” says an importer, who points to stable prices.
It is particularly bad weather and demanding logistics that keep prices up. This means challenges in harvesting fish and, not least, getting the fish to market.
“Now we have had a month of bad weather – in Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Norway. It’s pretty special. And that is the main argument for such high prices. Now it has been reported better been next week,” he adds.
SalmonBusiness’ industry sources refer to the following farmgate prices for salmon to be delivered the coming week:
- 3-4 kg NOK 73-75 (€7.3-7.5)
- 4-5 kg NOK 77-80 (€7.7-8.0)
- 5-6 kg NOK 83-85 (€8.3-8.5)
- 6+ kg NOK 88-95 (€8.8-9.5)
