A steep rise in salmon prices

After trading around €4/kg for the last five weeks, the salmon price spike today.

“42, 44 and 46 kroner, for salmon of three to six kilos, is what I’ve heard. It has been sold on that too. There are some who says it’s even higher too,” says a fish exporter to SalmonBusiness.

“More 44, 46, 48 kroner,” says another, adding that it is “almost ten kroner up a week.” [factbox]

Market players report a better balance between supply and demand than has been the case in the past month.

“The drivers are that the big ones have reduced quantity. A little less fish towards the end of the week,” says a trader. “Obviously there is less freezing when the price goes up. The air cargo market is going well.”

“One cannot expect the price to be 40 kroner. It’s not good for us or anyone else,” he notes.

According to SalmonBusiness’ industry sources, next week’s farm gate price (for breeder) is the most-traded weight classes in the following range:

  • 3-4 kg NOK 42-44 (€4.2-4.4)
  • 4-5 kg NOK 44-46 (€4.4-4.6)
  • 5-6 kg NOK 46-48 (€4.6-4.8)
  • 6+ kg NOK 55-60 (€5.5-6.0)
