Aqualine Canada project to construct 10 sea cages for Mowi

The project is being done in conjunction with Placentia Bay Ocean Enterprises.

A project by Norway’s Aqualine – widely known for its Midgard cage/pen system- at Lawn, located at the tip of the Burin Peninsula on Newfoundland’s South coast, Canada, is constructing 10 sea cages for Mowi.

The small town was selected from 11 locations, reports thetelegram.com.

“This is great for the area, when you look at all these small communities, there is no industry here other than the fishery and that’s declining,” said Lawn Mayor John Strang. “For us to get involved with aquaculture, you can’t ask for much better than that.”

“We are building ten Aqualine rings in Lawn at Newfoundland, and we hope for more deliveries in the coming years,” said Aqualine key account manager Stig Førre to SalmonBusiness.

The did not want to comment on who the customer is. In addition to Grieg NL, Cooke Aquaculture and Mowi-owned Northern Harvest are operating in this area.

“Based on this, we will establish ourselves with a department for the construction of cages and local service. This will happen during 2019-2020,” said Førre.

The first of the 10 cages is expected to be completed and placed in the water on Saturday, March 9. From there the cage will be pulled by a supply vessel to Fortune Bay.

Mowi has not yet replied to SalmonBusiness’ request for comment.
