The BC Salmon Farmers Association hosted a Community Appreciation BBQ at Robert V. Ostler Park on August 22, raising $4,862 for the Campbell River Food Bank.

The event, which attracted over 680 attendees, featured the preparation and serving of salmon fillets, leading to an early sell-out.

Brian Kingzett, Executive Director of the BC Salmon Farmers Association, expressed surprise at the large turnout and gratitude for the community’s support. Local businesses also contributed time and resources to the event’s success.

In addition to food, the event included engagement stations such as a Virtual Reality tour of a salmon farm, a Kid’s Zone, and a First Nations-led salmon farming booth. The Campbell River Food Bank was present, collecting donations and assisting with food service.

Joanne Watson, Executive Director of the Campbell River Food Bank, noted the importance of the funds raised, particularly during a time when donations typically decline. The money will be used to purchase fresh produce, meat, and dairy for those in need.

The event also highlighted concerns about food affordability and the impact of government decisions to phase out ocean-based salmon farms by 2029. Campbell River Councillor Susan Sinnott emphasized the importance of the salmon farming sector to the local economy and the city’s commitment to supporting it amidst current challenges.
