Corrosion-free specialist Brimer has been awarded a contract by Norwegian aquaculture technology firm Aquafarm Equipment AS to produce a semi-closed fish farm cage.

The cage, made from corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), is engineered to enhance fish health and operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact, according to a press release from the supplier on Thursday.

The semi-closed system design integrates advanced technology to minimize fish escapes, reduce mortality rates, and improve the quality of fish, offering a controlled farming environment. “We are pleased to have Brimer on board again for this prestigious project that represents the future of ocean aquaculture,” said Jarle Lønning, CEO of Aquafarm Equipment.

Lauritz Skeide, Brimer’s VP of Sales and Marketing, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “This is a major step for both Brimer and the aquaculture industry towards sustainable farming solutions.”

The cage, which has a 40-meter internal diameter, a 45-meter external diameter, and a height of 26 meters, weighs approximately 300 tons. Following production, it will be shipped for local assembly to an undisclosed international client.

Aquafarm’s semi-closed cage has generated interest globally, reflecting the aquaculture industry’s shift towards more sustainable practices. Brimer anticipates growing demand for its GRP-based solutions as environmental sustainability takes greater priority in aquaculture worldwide.
