Fourth time since 1952 that over 60 million sockeye have been caught in a run.

KDLG reports that Bristol Bay has had a record-breaking run. 2021 broke 2018’s record of 62.9 million, reaching 63.2 million fish.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game area management biologist Tim Sands said that the new record shows Bristol Bay’s sockeye management is working.

“We’ve been prosecuting the commercial salmon fishery management since 1884 and we are still able to set records on total runs, and I think that speaks to the escapement-based management that we use and it’s great,” he told the publication.

In June, processor Peter Pan Seafoods set a base price of USD 1.10 per pound (USD 2.4 per-kilo). It was the first time in at least 25 years that a Bristol Bay processor announced its base price this early in the year.
