Bernadette Jordan says Liberals mandate won’t be getting rid of any British Columbia salmon farms by 2025 in an interview.

In December, Trudeau wrote to new Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan to put into effect the Liberal party’s pledge to: “Work with the province of British Columbia and Indigenous communities to create a responsible plan to transition from open net-pen salmon farming in coastal British Columbia waters by 2025 and begin work to introduce Canada’s first-ever Aquaculture Act”.

Talking to Seawestnews, during her first visit to B.C as Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, Jordan said the 2025 deadline in her mandate letter is the date to “come up with a plan” to remove salmon farms – and not necessarily remove them by that date.

“The mandate letter is clear that I have to come up with a plan by 2025 and that’s what I will be doing,” added Jordan.
