Chilean authorities suspend all antibiotic free certifications in Magallenes region

Temporary measure – post-Nova Austral scandal – affects Australis Mar, Salmones Magallanes, Cermaq, Blumar and Multiexport.

Chile’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service Sernapesca has suspended the antibiotic-free certifications of every single salmon farmer in the Magallanes region, southern Chile, reports BioBioChile.

Last week, the day after Nova Austral – embroiled in the “Salmon Leaks” scandal – admitted that it has identified occasions of misreported mortalities to Sernapesca over the last production cycle – it fired CEO Nicos Nicolaides.

The company is now in the process of being sued.

Authorities said that it decided to extend this measure to Australis Mar, Salmones Magallanes, Cermaq, Blumar and Multiexport “in order to reformulate the requirements and deadlines necessary to achieve accreditation”. Sernapesca will announce the modifications during the next week.
