Earthquake recorded off the coast of Southern Chile

6.8 magnitude earthquake 140km west of the town of Corral, about 150 miles away from salmon city Puerto Montt.

A quake recorded off the coast of Los Lagos in the south of Chile was recorded on Sunday night at 21:39 (CLT).

The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of interior and public security (ONEMI) reported that a medium-intensity earthquake in the regions of Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos, home to many salmon farming sites and processors.

To date, the body said that the characteristics of the earthquake does not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale may cause a lot of damage in very populated areas. From 7.0 upwards it is considered a major earthquake.

ONEMI added that no harm or damage has been reported.
