Estonian PR Foods plans offshore rainbow trout farm

The estimated annual production of the complex is 2,050 metric tons.

Saaremere Kala, a subsidiary of Estonian seafood firm, PRFoods, is planning to build a further offshore fish farming complex in the vicinity of Hiiumaa, off the coast of Estonia.

The permit allows for offshore cages with an estimated annual production of 2,050 metric tons. If approved, the permit is valid 50 years.

PRFoods, which is listed on the main list of NASDAQ OMX Tallinn Stock Exchange, has been enjoying a particularly busy year.

Last year, the company bought two high-end UK-based smoked salmon processors including JRJ of Scotland, John Ross Jr and Coln Valley.

In addition, the Baltic food production company runs processing facilities in Finland (Heimon Kala in Renko and Trio Trading in Kokkola) and in Estonia (Vettel on the island Saaremaa).

In an annual report released in September, Indrek Kasela, member of the management board of Saaremere Kala, said that he envisaged even further growth: “we have undertaken a plan to increase substantially our fish farming capacity and the target is to increase the capacity by 2-3 times from today’s capacity.”
