Cermaq converts four development licences to commercial production.
The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has approved the conversion of Cermaq Norway’s four development licences under the iFarm project into standard commercial aquaculture licences.
The licences, granted in 2019 for the iFarm development concept, can now be used for either continued operations with iFarm technology or conventional production. Before activation as commercial licences, Cermaq must apply for placement within one or more production zones and seek clearance from the relevant county authorities.
Cermaq welcomed the decision, with Regional Director Snorre Jonassen stating, “We are proud that the Directorate recognises the project and the potential of the technology we have developed with our partner BioSort and many Cermaq employees. This is an important step towards more sustainable aquaculture with improved fish welfare and environmental adaptation.”
Cermaq, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, is one of the world’s largest salmon producers, with operations in Norway, Chile, and Canada.
