GroAqua and Bakkafrost have entered into a landmark agreement for the construction of the world’s largest feed barge, set to feature an unprecedented 1,100 tonnes of feed storage capacity and 24 feed lines.

The barge will allow for the simultaneous feeding of 24 pens, marking a significant technological advance in aquaculture infrastructure.

The feed barge will be equipped with GroAqua’s latest automation technology, GroVision, ensuring that the unit operates without the need for human staff onboard. This represents a further step towards greater efficiency and sustainability in the industry.

This agreement, the second of two large feed barges GroAqua is building for Bakkafrost, is a milestone for both companies.

GroAqua’s Ólavur Thomsen noted that the project is gaining international attention due to the groundbreaking size and technological capabilities of the barges. The feed barges, to be built at GroAqua’s Polish facility, are expected to be delivered by summer 2025.

GroAqua, headquartered in the Faroe Islands, operates with additional facilities in Poland, Scotland, and Norway, employing 100 staff across its locations.
