SalmonBusiness launches reader support initiative to grow independent newsroom.
SalmonBusiness has launched a Buy Me a Coffee page, inviting readers to support the site’s continued growth through small voluntary contributions. The move is part of a wider push to expand coverage, grow the editorial team, and keep industry journalism open and accessible to all.
The site, which has seen rapid growth since its relaunch in 2023, now reaches more than 70,000 readers a month, with over 250,000 monthly LinkedIn impressions and a 50%+ open rate on its daily newsletter. With a global readership spanning the UK, Norway, North America, and beyond, SalmonBusiness has become a trusted voice in the seafood sector — combining industry insight with independent reporting and a touch of satire.
Now, we want to do more.
“We want to build a newsroom that reflects the scale and complexity of the industry we cover,” said editor Matthew Wilcox. “That means more original reporting, better use of data, and hiring new journalists to extend our reach. But we also want to keep SalmonBusiness free to read, and independent. Reader support helps make that possible.”
The new support page, hosted on Buy Me a Coffee, allows readers to contribute directly — either through one-off donations or recurring monthly support. The funds will be used to hire reporters, fund travel and interviews, and expand projects like the Catch of the Day series (its time we bought a graphics tablet!).
While some media outlets have turned to paywalls or subscriptions, SalmonBusiness has opted for a different path: keeping access open, and inviting those who find value in the work to support it voluntarily.
“Everyone can read the site. A few good people help keep it going. That’s the model,” Wilcox said.
The support link is now live on the SalmonBusiness website and will appear on the homepage and in the daily newsletter. Readers who wish to contribute can do so at any level — from the price of a coffee to something more substantial.
