Huon begins antibiotic treatment as salmon disease reaches Storm Bay.

Huon Aquaculture has commenced antibiotic treatment at two pens in its Storm Bay lease following confirmation of a bacterial infection.

The company announced on Monday that it is treating fish affected by Piscirickettsia salmonis, a pathogen previously linked to the loss of over one million fish in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel earlier this year.

Treatment is being administered through medicated feed and was approved by veterinary authorities. Huon stated that salmon remains safe to eat, noting that mandatory withdrawal periods between treatment and harvest are in place to ensure no antibiotic residue remains in the final product.

Environmental monitoring, including tests on wild fish, will be conducted in line with requirements from Tasmania’s Environmental Protection Authority.

The detection in Storm Bay, which stretches from Bruny Island to the Tasman Peninsula, comes amid renewed public scrutiny of the sector ahead of the federal election.
