A TikTok video of shopper expressing frustration after discovering salmon fillets locked in a plastic security box at a local Tesco Express, has racked up more than 20,000 views on the social media platform.
Roisin Crowley Linton, 31, was purchasing ingredients for a miso dish on April 12 when she found the £4.85 salmon secured in an oversized plastic container to deter theft.
The clip shows her picking up the salmon and heading to the till, with a caption highlighting her embarrassment. Many commenters agreed that locking up the salmon seemed excessive, while others defended the supermarket’s actions, attributing the measures to shoplifting concerns.

Linton described the experience as mortifying and compared it to buying toilet paper publicly. “It’s such a big box as well. It’s very grandiose. I don’t even know if it would fit in a basket,” she said. “I just wanted to get my broccoli and my salmon and go home but then all of a sudden it’s some big ordeal.”
Despite her discomfort, Linton acknowledged the cashier’s explanation that the security measures were necessary to prevent theft. “I guess there’s been salmon stealers. It has honestly put me off buying salmon if it’s in a box,” she admitted.
