“We have observed an increasing demand for larger post-smolt, up to 1 kg. By enlarging the smolts before release, we can shorten the sea phase.”

8F Asset Management and Pure Salmon Technology have announced a collaboration with Ecofisk to develop a post-smolt facility with a capacity of 7,000 tonnes.

The facility, to be built on a 289,000 square meter plot secured by Ecofisk in 2019, will have permits for annual production of 40,000 tonnes and the capacity to raise up to 20 million post-smolts, each up to 1,000 grams, making it one of Norway’s largest smolt facilities.

Stephane Farouze, chairman of 8F Asset Management, emphasized the importance of increasing post-smolt capacity in Norway.

“This initiative is crucial for accelerating the development of post-smolt capacity in Norway,” said Farouze. “By combining our financial expertise with Pure Salmon Technology’s development capabilities, we are creating a model that enhances production efficiency and sustainability. This facility will support the increasing demand for larger smolts and improve fish welfare by reducing the sea phase and associated treatments.”

Pure Salmon Technology will design the facility, while 8F will provide financial structuring. The business model includes flexible leasing options or shared ownership, allowing established fish farmers to access modern facilities without significant upfront investments.

“We have observed an increasing demand for larger post-smolt, up to 1 kg. By enlarging the smolts before release, we can shorten the sea phase, which leads to better utilization of concessions. We will not operate the facility but will serve as project developers. This enhances our role as a strong partner in the Norwegian aquaculture industry,” said Michael Mortensen, chief business development officer at Pure Salmon Technology.

Construction is set to begin immediately, with the first fish expected by 2027/28.
