Great Northern Salmon (GNS) is set to begin pre-construction site preparation for its Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) salmon farm in Millinocket, Maine, in mid-September 2024.

The work will focus on ground preparation, in collaboration with site owner Our Katahdin, and is expected to take around ten months.

The project has secured financial backing from several organizations, including the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), the Northern Borders Regional Commission (NBRC), and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Republic Services has been contracted to handle the site work, with Sevee & Maher, a Maine-based firm, acting as the lead engineering partner. The pre-construction activities will focus on draining and removing settlement materials from a former lagoon, which will be the location for the land-based salmon farm.

Marianne Naess, CEO of GNS, said, “Our collaboration with Our Katahdin has enabled us to begin this work on schedule and make progress towards our facility’s development.”

The facility is expected to produce 10,000 metric tons of Atlantic salmon annually and create 80 full-time jobs at full production.

GNS is also working to close its Series A funding round and finalize detailed design and cost estimates this fall.
