Laxey invests in Marel’s processing equipment and software for Iceland facility.
Laxey has signed an agreement with Marel for the supply of advanced fish processing equipment and software for its new land-based salmon slaughterhouse in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland.
The deal represents a strategic milestone in Laxey’s goal to achieve an annual production capacity of 32,000 tonnes of salmon.
The agreement includes Marel’s Smartline Grader and AXIN software, technologies designed to enhance grading precision, operational efficiency, and product traceability. Marel’s AXIN software provides real-time data access, enabling Laxey to monitor production processes, address potential issues swiftly, and optimize resource utilization. The Smartline Grader offers precise size-grading capabilities to meet growing market demands for sustainability and efficiency in aquaculture operations.
Kristmann Kristmannsson, Processing and Procurement Manager at Laxey, emphasized the importance of robust processing systems: “Having a clear overview of the processing, strong traceability, and the ability to ensure efficiency at all stages of production is incredibly important to us.”
Marel’s Commitment to Aquaculture
Marel, a global leader in food processing technology, highlighted the benefits of the collaboration. Skúli Sigurðsson, Vice President of Fish at Marel, stated: “Our customers want reliable data, high-quality products, and technology that can predict their production line’s status. We are proud to collaborate with Laxey on this project and support their journey to set new benchmarks in aquaculture.”
The first phase of Laxey’s land-based aquaculture facility was completed in late 2024, with smolt transfers already underway. The first harvest is scheduled for autumn 2025. The facility’s RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) technology minimizes water use and supports Laxey’s sustainability goals, aligning with the broader industry trend toward environmentally responsible practices.
