Losses from algae bloom now more than 12,000 tonnes

Increased mortality in Troms region.

The toxic algae bloom is still present in several fjords in Nordland and Troms, Northern Norway.

The Directorate of Fisheries’ rough estimate of lost fish indicates a total of 12,000 tonnes, divided into 5,200 and 6,800 tonnes in Nordland and Troms, respectively.

The hardest hit area, the Ofotfjord close to Narvik, has no longer any mortality, mainly becuase most of the fish is dead or harvested.

Thursday, the coast guard ship “Heimdal” started its work screening the samples on board, which gives approximately the magnitude of the algae Chrysochromulina.

The information suggests that there are high concentrations of algae towards the outer part of the Ofotfjord.
