“Downstream material, they said. Easy crowd, they said. Well, here we are…”

SalmonBusiness, the leading English language news platform for the salmon farming industry, is diving into new waters with the launch of its own cartoon series, Catch of the Day.

The series, debuting Monday, 16 September, will address industry trends, challenges, and corporate culture through a satirical lens, targeting both industry insiders and broader audiences.

Matthew Wilcox, editor of SalmonBusiness, commented on the new venture: “We wanted to engage with our readers in a new and creative way. The salmon industry has its fair share of challenges and quirks, and we thought a lighthearted cartoon could offer some comic relief while still highlighting key issues in a fresh format.”

250,000 impressions

The comic series comes at a time when SalmonBusiness is experiencing substantial growth.

The site now records more than a quarter million impressions on LinkedIn every month, attracting nearly 1,000 new subscribers in the past month alone.

Wilcox believes the new cartoon series will help capitalize on this momentum:

“We’re seeing fantastic growth, but we know we can do even better. Driving more traffic to the site is crucial for increasing our advertising, which in turn will allow us to take our coverage to the next level.”

SalmonBusiness, founded in 2017 by Aslak Berge and Trine Forsland, was created as a free-to-view, English-language version of the popular Norwegian salmon farming news site iLaks, and continues to serve as a vital source of industry insights.

The site was purchased and relaunched by former reporter Matthew Wilcox in 2023.

Billionaire Island

Wilcox sees the launch of catch of the day as a way to entertain, inform, and keep audiences engaged with fresh, relatable content.

“Interest in the salmon industry has never been higher, with the premier of Netflix’s glossy Succession-style drama Biillionaire island, and the impending launch of the English-language edition of SalmonBusiness founder Aslak Berge’s book on Mowi, now is the time to capitalize,” says Wilcox.

“Our readers are here for the news, but they also appreciate a lighthearted take on the industry they work in. The cartoon will give them something to look forward to on a daily basis, and if it can make them smile, they’ll be more likely to stick around.”
