Mowi-backed Norwegian salmon producer Nova Sea has announced plans to build 20 new homes for its employees in Lovund, a development aimed at addressing housing shortages and accommodating future workforce needs.

“We are going to build more homes, both because space is tight and with a new processing facility in the future, we will need new places to live on the island,” said Ingrid Henriksen, communications advisor at Nova Sea, to local media outlet Rana Blad.

The project includes ten micro-houses, each with a combined bedroom and living room/kitchen, and ten terraced apartments.

The timeline for the construction start has not yet been determined. “So far we only have a few floor plans. It will be built on Sørmarka, where we have already built a dozen homes before,” said Henriksen.

Sørmarka is located just southwest of the new large processing facility planned for Lovund.

Industrial development has been crucial for maintaining employment and the local community in the outer parts of Helgeland, according to Norwegian aquaculture news site iLaks.

Nova Sea’s efforts align with the initial motivations of Hans Petter Meland and Steinar Olaisen, who started salmon farming in Lovund in the early 1970s to combat population decline.

The largest single shareholder in Nova Sea is salmon giant Mowi, holding 49 percent.
