Scotland’s largest salmon producer, Mowi has announced plans to redevelop Carradale Harbour on Scotland’s west coast.

The proposal marks a significant investment for the company and includes the construction of a new shorebase, storage facilities, and a pontoon.

This development is expected to integrate with the surrounding landscape and aims to stimulate community regeneration, according to Mowi.

Ben Hadfield, COO of Mowi’s Farming operations in Scotland, stated that the company envisions the redevelopment as a means to alleviate existing operational pressures and create facilities that serve both local business needs and community interests.

Mowi claims that its long-standing presence in Carradale, where it directly employs 12 people, has positively impacted the local economy. The company also seeks planning permission for an additional farm in North Kilbrannan Sound, which it says could create 10 more jobs.

The proposed development includes a farm manager’s office and a separate support building for storage and staff welfare. These new facilities will be developed with public-friendly landscaping and car parking that blends with the natural environment, according to Mowi. A new pontoon, aimed at supporting local boat owners and fishermen, is also part of the plan.

Mowi plans to relinquish its current shorebase on Shore Road and shared harbour areas, proposing that these spaces could be repurposed for community development projects to benefit locals and visitors.

Ann Nisbet Studio, an award-winning architectural firm, has been commissioned to create the masterplan for the redevelopment. Mowi claims that the firm’s design will reflect and enhance both the immediate site and the wider coastal landscape of Carradale Harbour.

Ian Brodie, Chair of East Kintyre Community Council, has welcomed Mowi’s redevelopment proposal, recognizing the potential benefits it could bring to revitalizing the harbour environment.

Mowi Scotland emphasizes that a community engagement process will be integral to the project’s development, aiming to ensure that the proposal aligns with local needs and preferences. The company presents this redevelopment as an opportunity to enhance Carradale Harbour, claiming it will contribute positively to the community and the local economy.
