Mowi has secured Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification for its feed production facilities located in Valsneset, Norway, and Kyleakin, Scotland.

This development aligns with the company’s sustainability objectives and ensures compliance with upcoming ASC requirements.

The ASC certification mandates stringent standards for supplier and raw material management. Mowi’s successful certification is attributed to a concerted two-year effort, fostering a unified approach across its feed operations. Marit Engelstad, Quality Manager Supply Chain for Mowi Feed, emphasized the role of comprehensive teamwork in achieving this milestone. She noted that the process has strengthened the feed organization and highlighted the benefits of sharing experiences and best practices across the company.

Catarina Martins, Mowi’s Chief Sustainability and Technology Officer, underscored the significance of this achievement in line with the company’s sustainability strategy. She stated that Mowi aims to have 100% of its annual harvest volumes certified under a Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) recognized standard, such as ASC, Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), or GlobalGAP. Martins added that obtaining ASC certification for the feed plants is crucial to maintaining certification at Mowi’s European farming sites.

The Kyleakin facility, operational since 2019, boasts an annual production capacity of approximately 240,000 metric tonnes, supported by both high-capacity and flexible production lines.

The Valsneset plant has been in operation since 2014, contributing significantly to Mowi’s feed production capabilities.

This certification ensures that Mowi’s ASC-certified farms in Scotland, the Faroe Islands, and Norway will comply with the forthcoming requirement, effective from October 31, 2025, that mandates ASC-certified farms to source feed exclusively from ASC-certified feed mills.

In addition to Mowi’s achievement, Cargill’s EWOS feed mill in Surrey, British Columbia, has also attained ASC certification, marking the first such certification for a feed company in Canada. This development signifies a broader trend of feed producers adopting responsible practices in line with ASC standards.

The ASC Feed Standard aims to promote responsible seafood farming by ensuring that feed ingredients are sourced and produced with minimal environmental and social impacts. Certified feed mills are required to assess and report energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and water consumption, while also implementing measures to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
